Start Something That Matters

If I never had to worry about money, I would love to spend my time either cooking for people that are in the need of a good, home cooked meal, or just spend my days working with mentally disabled children and have a good time with them. Nothing is more satisfying than the look on somebody’s face when they try your delicious food, or a disabled child running up to you saying, “You’re my best friend Akane!” I would possibly become a type of chef or teacher/mentor to young children. In doing this, I would want to return all the happiness that the kids I have tutored have given me.

Good Spread Peanut Butter: This story is about 2 men that developed their own brand of peanut butter. With each jar bought, a package of mana nutrition is given to children in need. Mana nutrition is a “peanut butter on steroids”, which completely recovers children that are suffering or on the brink of death from malnutrition. This story caught my attention because along their journey to spread the word about mana nutrition, the bus that they were living in caught fire and was destroyed. Despite their many hardships, they never stopped and continued to help the cause.

Half 4 the Hungry: With this idea, when you go to a restaurant that participates, you pay full price but get ½ of the serving. A minimum of $4 from each meal is donated by the restaurant to a charity that feeds hungry children. In this concept, Americans are eating less calories than they need and children that need it are being fed. This is a great idea because somebody that wants to donate really doesn’t have to go out of their way to do so. All they have to do is pay a bit extra for what they are served at the restaurant and they are almost instantly helping a hungry child.

Crowdfunding Meals from Local Restaurants to get Delivered to Local Soup Kitchens: Instead of giving a homeless man money for food, you can simply raise money for certain restaurants. Once the restaurant collects a certain amount of “MealTics”, they donate meals to the local soup kitchens and homeless shelters. This way, money is being given directly to the community, feeding those living on the streets, and meals are being provided that the homeless have most likely never been able to enjoy.

Each of these ideas stood out to me because I strongly believe that nobody should go hungry when some countries, like the US, have more food than we need. Donating your time and money can be crucial to another’s life. A simple act of kindness can make the difference between a child surviving malnutrition or it being the cause of their death. A donation of half of your meal or donating money to a restaurant for a homeless person’s MealTics can be based on whether they get their next meal or not.
